Career Overview

Cristiano Ronaldo joined the Sporting CP academy in Lisbon at the age of 12 after moving from his native Madeira. He made his professional debut for Sporting CP in the 2002–03 season and attracted immediate attention from European clubs. Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson signed him in the summer of 2003 for £12.24 million, the highest fee paid at that time for a teenager.

At Manchester United, Ronaldo developed from an inconsistent but exciting winger into one of the most complete forwards in the game. The 2007–08 season was his finest in English football: he scored 42 goals across all competitions, won his first Ballon d'Or, and lifted the UEFA Champions League with United in Moscow. Real Madrid acquired him in 2009 for a then-world-record €94 million.

At Real Madrid, Ronaldo broke virtually every scoring record in the club's history and in the history of La Liga. He scored 450 goals in 438 appearances — including a record 50-goal La Liga season in 2010–11 — and won the UEFA Champions League four times between 2014 and 2018. He joined Juventus in 2018 for €100 million, winning two Serie A titles before returning briefly to Manchester United and subsequently moving to Saudi club Al Nassr in January 2023.

Internationally, Ronaldo surpassed the European international scoring record in 2021, passing the mark set by Iran's Ali Daei, and has gone on to become the world's leading international goalscorer with over 130 goals in more than 200 caps. He led Portugal to their first major title at UEFA Euro 2016.
